221 applications were received in the frame of the Astronaut for a Day national contest, of which 215 meet the eligibility criteria set for the competition.
The gender repartition is as follows:
- 68% male
- 32% female
Whereas the age repartition is divided into 3 categories:
- 13 - 14 y.o: 38%
- 15 - 16 y.o: 29%
- 17 y.o and more: 33%
The 221 candidates were invited to participate in the second stage of the selection process - replicating the real astronauts selection process - which consists of logical reasoning and comprehension tests. From those 221 candidates, only 125 will be selected based on their motivation for the project and results at the tests to move to the physical tests phase - Stage 3 of the selection process - planned on May 11 and 16, 2023.
The official announcement of the 125 candidates selected will take place on April 26th at the Schoulfoire from 4:30 pm onwards. Candidates are invited to join to meet their peers and discover if they have been selected for Stage 3.
About Astronaut for a Day
Organised by the Luxembourg Space Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sports, the national competition "Astronaut for a day" aims to promote the space sector in particular among young people. The competition is open to all young people aged 13 years old minimum and who are enrolled in secondary education in a school based in Luxembourg.
The 25 finalists of the competition will be selected to be part of the "Astronaut for a Day" class and will become space ambassadors in their school community. They will experience a zero gravity flight on 28 September 2023.
