The Frontier Development Lab (FDL) is an applied artificial intelligence research initiative that pairs researchers from the space sciences with data scientists for an intense 8-week concentrated study applying AI/ML to challenges important to NASA’s space exploration and science goals - and all humankind.
FDL runs between 22nd June and 14th August 2020 and is hosted by the SETI Institute and NASA Ames in Mountain View, CA.
The Luxembourg Space Agency encourages all PhD candidates and Postdocs interested in solving problems using modern AI technologies to apply. PhD and Postdoc students with Luxembourg nationality or PhD and Postdoc students conducting their research in Luxembourg are eligible.
Deadline: Monday 6 April 2020.
FDL is looking for post-doc or doctorate researchers with experience and interest in the following challenge area:
Moon Engine: Moon For Good, Phase II (in partnership with the Luxembourg Space Agency)
Leveraging the work of the 2019 FDL Moon for Good team to extend their work toward identifying lunar resources of interest in strategic regions as well as producing 3-D high-resolution maps of the North and South Poles to support future lunar exploration missions.
Other topic areas include:
- Heliophysics
- Astrophysics
- Earth Science
- Disaster Management
- Astronaut Health
Compute, data and advisory is provided by Google, Intel, IBM, Nvidia, Lockheed Martin, HPE, Kx, MIT, The Mayo Clinic and USGS.
Researchers receive a stipend and are provided with accommodation for any travel.
The closing date for applications is Monday 6th of April, although we encourage you to apply sooner to ensure a place.
Please visit the FDL website to apply at frontierdevelopmentlab.org/apply
We are also running an FDL in Europe with ESA. FDL Europe’s focus will be on Earth Observation, ML onboard and the SDGs. (www.fdleurope.org)
FDL’s response to COVID-19
We are monitoring the situation and following World Health Organisation advice closely. We are putting in place contingency processes and plans in the event of continued limits on local and international travel. We expect FDL to go ahead this summer but will be tailoring our processes, location and working methods (including virtual participation) as needed to safeguard everyone joining us.
